Over the last quarter, I've learned much about the foundation of AICE Media Studies AS. I learned about mise-en-scene, which involves everything in the frame of the camera and the messages that these things convey to the audience, including the set, the costume design, and more. In addition, I completed one of my first assignments, which saw me create a storyboard, complete with descriptions of what was happening in each scene, pictures that I took myself, camera movements, and more. Another integral aspect of the course that I learned was the use of semiotics, which is how films signal certain themes or concepts to audiences. Various signs include iconic signs, indexical signs, and symbolic signs. One of my greatest achievements was the creation of this blog, which was created after we went over the coursework we would have to gradually do over the year. Mrs. Horsley also informed us about photojournalism and the laws we are bound to when it comes to using photos that we do not own. Finally, my most recent accomplishment was the completion of my first case study, which took a deep dive into the marketing and distribution practices of Netflix.
In terms of what I'd like to learn next quarter, I'd say that I'm very interested in the post-production phase of films. We've already learned how films are planned (storyboarding) and how films are, well, filmed (shot types and mise-en-scene), but we have yet to delve into the finishing touches of films, specifically the editing process.
