First Steps of Planning Have Been Completed.

As promised last week, I have a rather large update. Throughout Thanksgiving break, I worked on the third assignment for Media Studies AS, which required me to film a scene of two people having a conversation while incorporating four different camera techniques, including the 180 degree rule, match on match shots, and more. I filmed it using my father and my brother as actors, while I worked the camera. I then put the shots together on my computer and uploaded it to this fine blog. It probably isn't the highest quality production, but it was also my first, and by the time my brother and I create our film opening, our skills will be much better!

In addition, we completed some practice/planning shots that I also uploaded to my blog. There was an extreme close-up, there was a Dutch tilt, and three other cool techniques. The assignment was supposed to kind of warm us up for the filming we'd be doing in the future, and in that aspect it succeeded.

Perhaps most importantly, Cole and I sat down and we have started discussing what our movie will be about and what direction we'd like to explore, narratively speaking. We decided that the genre will be a teen-drama set in high school. It will be a film that explores the mental health issues that many teenagers in school face. More specifically, it will showcase the pressure and struggles that many of the best students in school may face, such as homework and school overtaking one's social life and the how hard these students can be on themselves. This idea comes from not only from our personal experience but also that of our friends, as we are more or less walking disasters. Our lead character is currently shaping up to be a male teenager in high school who gets really good grades. They have a lot of stress and problems in their lives, but they mask it with a positive attitude that normally convinces everyone that they're fine. Overtime though, cracks start to show in their guise, and they have to learn how to balance their school work with their social lives. For the opening scene, we were thinking about a montage of what this person's morning routine looks like so that audiences can get an idea of who this character is. They would presumably have a room with tons of classwork on the floor, and some of this classwork would be covering stuff like magazines or other recreational objects to show how his social life is being overtaken by school. There are other concepts we have, but I won't spoil them all here. After all, the storyboard and the first draft of the script should be done some time next week. So, you'll hear from me soon!
